The School of Foreign Languages

A Brief Introduction

The history of foreign language teaching in Soochow University dates back to over 110 years ago when the University was founded. Among its early distinguished alumni were eminent linguist and foreign language educator, Xu Guozhang, and writer and translator, Yang Jiang.

The School of Foreign Languages grew out of the early Soochow University’s Department of English.  Founded in 1940, it was later renamed as the Department of Foreign Languages when the University changed its name to Jiangsu Teachers’ College in the 1950s, and in 1995, it became the School of Foreign Languages when the University adopted its current name. Over the course of 70 years, the School has developed into an influential base for foreign language education in China.

The School is currently staffed with a faculty of some 226 full-time teachers (including 21 professors and 72 associate professors) and 20 administrative assistants. Over 50 of them have a doctoral degree in an area related to linguistics, literary or translation studies. The School offers seven undergraduate programs in seven different languages, namely, English, Russian, Japanese, French, Korean, German and Spanish. In the 1980s, its first graduate program in English Language & Literature began to operate. By 2000, its Master’s programs had expanded to cover six other areas including: Russian Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Translation & Interpreting, and English Curriculum Designing and Pedagogy.

In 2003, the School established its first doctoral program in the area of English Language & Literature. The same area was officially named as one of Jiangsu Province’s Key Disciplines during the 15 years in the "9th Five-Year Plan", “the 10th Five-Year Plan" and "the 11th Five-Year Plan". In 2010, the discipline of Foreign Language & Literature as a whole was awarded the right to confer graduate degrees at both the master’s and the doctoral levels. In 2011, the School set up three other second-tier doctoral specialties in Russian Language & Literature, Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics and Translation studies. Subsequently, the School’s entire Foreign Language & Literature program became one of Jiangsu Province’s Key Disciplines. Meanwhile, the School now runs one of Jiangsu Province’s postdoctoral working stations in Foreign Language & Literature.

There are currently in the school over 1,100 undergraduates and some 330 full-time graduate students. The School makes it a point that all of them get the best that it could offer in quality teaching. In 2010, when its English program became one of the Province’s Most Important Undergraduate programs, the English Department’s Serial Courses in Comprehensive English was enlisted as one of the Province’s Recommended University Courses and more recently, A Course in Classical English Essays: From Francis Bacon to Virginia Woolf became a star course named and recommended by the Ministry of Education for open online viewing. In 2009, the Serial Course in Practical English for Non-English-Majors had been included in the Ministry of Education’s National Quality Open Courseware. And in 2011, the School’s Department of College English Teaching became one of the Ministry of Education’s “Standard Working Bases in Implementing Reforms to College English Teaching”.

The School has been consistently committed to promoting research. In the 1980s and 1990s, Prof. Wang Wenchang edited and published The Dictionary of English Collocations (1988) and The New-Century Dictionary of Current English Usage (1998). While the former grabbed the top National Book Prize in Education, the latter was awarded the National Book Prize. Currently, the School faculty head at least ten projects, from the National Social Sciences Foundation, and some one hundred others supported by Jiangsu Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education; they publish regularly in Chinese and international academic journals each year, and each year, they bring out over fifty books (monographs and translation).

The School has the privilege of being located on the original campus grounds of the old Soochow University where the old layout, the beautiful architecture and the various flora stand as a constant reminder of its past and tradition. While the School administration is based in Cong Yuan Building, each of the departments is housed in one of the stylish old faculty villas. Most classroom buildings and its multi-media laboratories stand close nearby. The School currently runs a FM station and publishes a University English newspaper (College English Plus) to facilitate teaching and learning. And the School also carries to a sizeable collection of old and new books in the reference room and they provide teachers and students with the basic conditions for research or study.
